Located just 25 kilometres away from Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam is the state capital of Selangor and had its early beginnings as the first planned city in Malaysia after independence in 1957. Shah Alam was once known as Sungai Renggam and was famous for its rubber and oil palm estates.

Location of Shah Alam

Prior to Malaysian Independence, it became known as Batu Tiga. This name was eventually replaced with "Shah Alam" in 1978 by the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in memory of his father, Sultan Alam Shah.

Thanks to its early years as a planned city, Shah Alam has grown into becoming one of the most well-planned cities in Malaysia, with an urban layout similar to Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya. The city today consists of mostly housing areas and commercial centers divided into 56 sections. It is also home to one of Proton's two car manufacturing plants and various other major landmarks.

But what Shah Alam is truly famous for is its mosque, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque. The Blue Mosque is the largest in Malaysia and one of the largest in Southeast Asia with a capacity of 16,000 worshippers.

Shah Alam is also home to the Selangor State Museum, Selangor State Library, The Selangor Islamic Arts Complex, National Botanical Gardens and the Shah Alam Lake Gardens.

Located strategically in the heart of the Klang Valley makes Shah Alam a city that is easily accessible from all major urban centers in Selangor.
